In 2011 Rory McIlroy won the US Open at The Congressional golf course. As part of his apprenticeship he played in the Lytham Trophy twice, finishing third on each occasion

On his first appearance he came to the last green in contention. Indeed had he taken just two putts he would have been in the play-off. Fired by the impetuosity of youth, his first putt ran three feet past and he missed the return putt.
On his second appearance he was again in contention but the attritional finish took its toll and he dropped off the lead to finish in third place once more.

So what did he learn from his two appearances? Patience perhaps more than anything and course management.
